Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Packaging materials play an important role in the quality of food products by providing protection from environmental, chemical, and physical challenges. The principal function of packaging involves retardation of deterioration, extension of shelf-life, and maintenance of quality and safety of packaged food. Various types of natural and synthetic materials, including plastics, glass, metals, and papers and their composites, have been used for food packaging. However, choosing relevant packaging materials is a complex issue due to a huge variety of products, packaging materials, and systems. In this Special Issue, we will summarize the main types, characteristics, and applications of various materials used for packing food, the interactions of food with packaging materials, and analyze the food contamination and the hazards to human health caused by different kinds of packing materials.
This scope of this Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers in the following concepts:
- Physical and chemical properties of food packaging materials;
- The function of packaging materials involving retardation of deterioration, extension of shelf-life, and maintenance of quality and safety of packaged food;
- Food safety concerns deriving from the use of various types of natural and synthetic packaging materials;
- Development of packaging materials, processing technologies, and preservative methods for food safety and preservation;
- Current security status and development tendency of packaging materials for various food;
- Designing food packaging machinery and assessing the compatibility of some new packaging materials and food safety;
- Interactions of food with packaging materials and elaboration of the mechanism, types, and contributing factors of migration of chemical substances from packaging to foods.
