Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Soft robotics is a rapidly evolving field that holds significant potential for transforming various industries, particularly the biomedical field. Unlike traditional rigid robots, soft robots are constructed from flexible, compliant materials, allowing them to adapt to complex and dynamic environments. This flexibility makes them ideal for tasks that require gentle interaction with delicate objects or tissues, such as in medical procedures, rehabilitation, and assistive devices.

One of the most promising applications of soft robotics is in the development of magnetic soft robots. These robots are composed of soft, elastomeric materials embedded with magnetic particles, enabling them to be controlled remotely using external magnetic fields. This innovative approach allows for the precise navigation and manipulation in constrained and sensitive environments, such as within the human body. For example, magnetic soft robots can be used for minimally invasive surgeries, where their flexibility and remote control capabilities allow them to navigate through complex vascular pathways to deliver targeted therapies or perform intricate surgical tasks with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues.

The integration of soft robotics into biomedical applications, combined with the principles of mechatronics, offers new opportunities for innovation and research. In this Special Issue, we aim to explore the latest advancements in soft robotics and mechatronics, with a focus on their applications in healthcare and beyond. We are particularly interested in contributions that address the design, fabrication, and control of soft robots, as well as their integration with sensing, actuation, and imaging technologies. We welcome submissions that provide insights into the challenges and opportunities of deploying soft robotics in real-world scenarios and that present novel solutions, prototypes, and case studies that demonstrate the potential of soft robotics and mechatronics to improve outcomes across various sectors.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Design and fabrication of soft robotic systems;
  • Actuation and control strategies for soft robots;
  • Mechatronic integration in soft robotics;
  • Biomedical applications of soft robotics, including surgical tools and assistive devices;
  • Integration of soft robotics with sensing and imaging technologies;
  • Case studies and prototypes demonstrating the impact of soft robotics and mechatronics in healthcare and other industries.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
