Dear Colleagues,
The Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing have seen massive growth in recent years, with many key applications emerging. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) play a critical role in enabling these technologies to spawn more effective applications. IoT-based systems generate a massive amount of data, which are stored and processed in the cloud. AI and ML accelerate the processing of data, allowing efficient information extraction and prompt decision making. Fog computing helps the cloud offload some of its computing and storage tasks to geo-distributed servers. Edge computing is making it possible to perform the pre-processing of data close to their source before sending them to the cloud.
The interplay between these technologies is vital for developing a rich ecosystem of smart applications. Despite their prospects, IoT, cloud, fog and edge computing are facing challenges such as scalability, interoperability, governance and security issues. For successful deployment, and scalable, reliable, secure and efficient operation of cloud-native smart applications, tremendous research efforts are required in the areas of architectural models/frameworks, service orchestration, resource management, quality of service and security/trust/identity management. Moreover, various use cases of IoT and cloud-based systems for healthcare, agriculture, Industry 4.0, smart cities, etc., should be explored.
This Special Issue seeks novel contributions related to the abovementioned issues. Solicited papers include those on the following topics, among others:
- IoT platforms and applications;
- Architectural models for IoT and cloud-based computing;
- Service-oriented frameworks and middleware;
- Virtualization, containerization and microservices;
- Resource management and quality of service;
- Security for IoT and cloud data;
- Application of blockchain in IoT and cloud-based systems;
- AI and machine learning for IoT and cloud computing;
- Federated learning on cloud platforms;
- IoT and cloud-based smart applications;
- Osmotic computing and other edge computing paradigms;
- Green cloud computing.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
