Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue seeks to contribute with current and novel information on the physiology of mollusks, particularly of pearl-producing species. Papers are accepted on topics related to advances in culture techniques, physiological, antioxidant, immune, and gene responses associated with seeding for pearl production in species such as marine pearl oysters of the genera Pinctada and Pteria, freshwater mussels (e.g., Hyriposis sp.), and gastropods, such as abalone (Haliotis spp.) and the Queen conch (Strombus gigas). Other species potentially producing non-nacreous (porcelain) pearls include some pectinid scallops. The purpose of this volume is to open a forum of discussion on the current situation of pearl culture in several countries of the world where this activity is important, as well as in those where the activity is emerging. It also seeks to analyze the problems and prospects of solutions and the future growth of pearl farming in a globalized world influenced by climate change and the occurrence of new strains of pathogens.
