Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Urban forests have a significant role in the livability and resilience of cities, providing multiple ecosystem services. According to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, urban forests and green areas in cities contribute to achieving global sustainability targets, improving the urban environment and quality of life in the cities. Nowadays, green areas have become extremely important in a world that is facing challenges such as climate change, rapid urbanization, extreme weather events, and a lack of outdoor activities. The accelerated growth of the population in urbanized areas determines the stability of some measures to maintain the long-term viability of green areas for adequate comprehensive management strategies.
The urban forests and green areas of cities have some key aspects to demonstrate, including the following:
- Climate change mitigation and adaptation by temperature regulation to reduce the urban heat island to reduce the temperature.
- Provide ecosystem services that support urban biodiversity and air quality in cities where air pollution is harmful to a quality-of-life city.
- Socio-economic benefits by the access to urban green spaces and forests, which improved the well-being and mental health and relaxed tourism attractions.
We encourage studies from all fields, including interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research papers, review papers, and experimental research, to contribute to this Special Issue to promote the importance of forests and green environments in urban areas.
