Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the face of the increasing threats of climate fluctuation, forests are under immense pressure from changes taking place on a global scale. On the other hand, in times of intensive civilization development, new concepts for solving forest problems and modern tools and technologies emerge to support the maintenance of the homeostasis of forest ecosystems, the fulfilment of essential forest functions, and the provision of forest protection to promote the direction of forest management or to support the existence of the forest in crises and, after their disappearance, its rapid regeneration. The unprecedented role of modern and sustainable forestry is to apply these methods consistently with the developed practices of forestry in the pursuit of its production goals while delivering the expected benefits to society and thus minimizing the risk of social dissatisfaction. Forest engineering is vital in providing modern, innovative forest management methods. We hope this Special Issue will provide an excellent forum for a wide range of scientists to share their experiences, achievements, and views in identifying threat sources, pointing out directions and goals for forest engineering development and forest management, and presenting particular solutions to the problems diagnosed.

The editorial team cordially invites you to submit high-quality contributions—such as scientific articles, review articles, and case studies—focused on the following, but are by no means limited to topics:

  1. Natural disasters in forests: technical methods to prevent, mitigate, and support recovery.
  2. Ways and means to improve the technical protection of forest areas against fires.
  3. Natural and technical methods to improve forest water retention and management, reducing flood risk.
  4. Natural and technical methods to reduce erosion, debris transport, and landslides in forest areas.
  5. Optimizing the planning, construction, and maintenance of forest road networks.
  6. Road construction materials that meet the demands for the wide availability of multifunctional forest complexes.
  7. The impact of construction infrastructure on the forest environment.
  8. Innovative remote control and monitoring systems in forests.
  9. Technical and organizational measures to improve the social functions of forests.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
