Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wireless communications are widespread, with the development of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies (e.g., Bluetooth, Bluetooth low energy, WiFi, LoRa, Zigbee, LTE, etc.) enabling us to transfer and share data between devices. Indeed, an essential aspect of Industry 4.0 is the increased connection and cooperation between workers, machines, processes, and products thanks to industrial IoT systems and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. This goal demands a fast transfer of information across the supply chain, as well as the engineering, sales, and operations sectors; each of these sectors needs reliable, scalable network connectivity. For these reasons, several companies are considering the transition from wired to wireless M2M communications, integrating IoT smart sensors into machinery, and improving their reconfigurability and self-diagnosis capability. Additionally, various wireless technologies, such as cellular standards for short and long range (WiMAX, LTE, and 5G), are constantly developing, significantly improving the communications between automobiles (V2V) and roadside infrastructure (V2I). Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied to wireless communications, covering different application areas, such as interface management, smart signaling, location, and mobility management.

This Special Issue will discuss these trending topics and present innovative solutions and systems involving wireless communication technologies (i.e., Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRa, etc.) applied to smart environments, as well as NB-IoT and heterogeneous systems. Notably, the topics covered in this Special Issue include:

  • Smart solutions applied to IoT systems for intelligent resource and network management;
  • Algorithms and applications for distributed machine learning via wireless networks;
  • Application of wireless communication systems in a wide range of applications, from Industrial IoT to smart homes;
  • New communication technologies and architecture for improving network performance, efficiency, and security in IoT systems;
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT applications;
  • Security in cloud connection for IoT scenarios;
  • NB-IoT architectures and applications;
  • QoS communication in IoT-based systems;
  • Hardware and software algorithms for implementing any services in V2V and V2I communication;
  • Communication methods and architecture for custom and sensor networks;
  • Security and safety of data and network;
  • Cognitive radio and smart systems;
  • Application wireless communication for developing smart city networks;
  • Innovative solutions and architecture for smart grid and metering;
  • Performance assessment for wireless communication systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Future Internet is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
