Special Issue Information
It is my pleasure to announce this Special Issue devoted to the uncertainty in mechanical measurements.
In several contexts, there are many applications which contemplate the comparison of a general dataset to specified requirements from technical standards and/or from laws. This activity is in general not always straightforward, because it consists of a comparison between a measurement result (a mere approximation of measurand true value) and a threshold; thus, it is not a comparison between two numerical values.
Many decision-making processes are based on the results of these comparisons, and they may also have economic consequences. Thus, it is necessary not to ignore the measurement uncertainty because it plays a significant role in quantifying the incompleteness of the knowledge related to measurement finding. The higher the measurement uncertainty is, the smaller the rate of compliance.
In many fields of mechanical measurements, adequate technical and procedural reference standards about the quantification of measurement uncertainties are not available yet, and therefore, the scientific community has recently focused its interest on this theme.
Thus, I invite manuscripts in the form of expert comprehensive reviews or research articles, dealing with theory design, procedures, and instruments of mechanical measurement, with a particular focus on uncertainties issues.
Expected contributions are theoretical papers aimed at a further understanding of the fundamentals of mechanical measurements and associated technologies and instruments, including general principles of measurement, sensor and system modeling, data acquisition, processing, and evaluation. Moreover, scientific papers on measurement engineering applications regarding, but not limited to, nondestructive tests, vibrations, thermal, acoustic, optical, and laser measurements, and biomedical measurements are also welcome.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Instruments is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
