Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
During the last few years, the field of intervention in congenital heart disease has experienced numerous innovations. Some of them are expanding the indications for previously described techniques to a new patient population such as ductus arteriosus closure in pre-term babies or pulmonary valve implantation in large right ventricular outflow. Others are off-label use of devices such as vascular plugs for closure of membranous ventricular septal defects or muscular ventricular septal defect devices for tubular ducts in infants. Finally, closure of sinus venosus defects with a long-covered stent has been performed following the modification of an already existing device. Studies reported in this journal issue confirm the safety and efficacy of these new transcatheter techniques. They bring new perspectives to thousands of patients with cardiac defects, which can serve as alternatives to surgery.
