Dear Colleagues,
Metallic structural materials are highly desired in industrial production and people’s lives. Upgrading conventional structural materials and developing new materials have been the research hotspots in the fields of material research and industries. At present, metallic structural materials are developing towards intelligent manufacturing, high-performance, composite materials with an integrated structure and function.
The alloy’s composition and material processes determine its microstructure, which determines its final properties. Therefore, it is particularly important to comprehensively clarify the relationship among material preparation, microstructure, and properties, as well as the underlying mechanisms. The application fields and prospects of metallic structural materials are broad, and these materials provide a basis for supporting the development of high-end equipment towards large-scale, high-speed, lightweight, high-reliability, and long service lives in areas including modern transportation, aerospace, marine engineering and energy systems. Therefore, while improvements in materials’ conventional mechanical properties have received continuous attention, their service properties, such as fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, have also been increasingly focused. In recent years, the development of advanced characterization techniques and multi-scale simulation have facilitated the tailoring of the microstructures and properties of materials, and the application of artificial intelligence has also provided more possibilities for the development of advanced materials.
The present Issue is a special one, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Northeastern University. We that hope teachers, students and alumni of Northeastern University will submit their manuscripts to this Issue. We also welcome people who have cooperated with Northeastern University to share their work. It is hoped that this Issue could reflect the research frontier regarding metallic structural materials and the newest research progress, enhancing research and applications in the field of advanced structural materials and contributing to the academic prosperity of materials.

Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
