Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The oral cavity is a dynamic and complex ecosystem, home to a diverse microbiota comprising over 700 bacterial species alongside fungi, viruses, and protozoa. This intricate habitat supports microbial colonization on dental hard surfaces, restorative materials, and the soft tissues of the oral mucosa. Advanced molecular methods have significantly enhanced our understanding of the composition, functionality, and pathogenic potential of the oral microbiome in health and disease.

Microbial dysbiosis is increasingly recognized as a pivotal factor in the etiology of oral diseases, such as caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, and peri-implantitis, with implications extending to systemic health. While effective oral hygiene remains a cornerstone for preventing pathogenic microbial proliferation, host susceptibility and challenges in maintaining optimal hygiene have spurred innovative research into prevention and treatment strategies. Emerging approaches, including chemotherapeutic agents, photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemotherapeutic agents, probiotics, postbiotics, and nanotechnology-based smart materials, are redefining microbial management in dentistry.

This Special Issue, titled "Human Microbiome and Microbial Ecology of Oral Diseases", invites original research, review articles, and perspectives that address recent advancements in understanding the oral microbiome, its role in health and disease, and therapeutic innovations.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The composition and dynamics of oral biofilms in health and dysbiosis.
  • The role of oral microbiota in periodontal, peri-implant, carious, and endodontic infections.
  • Host–microbiota interactions and immune responses in oral disease progression.
  • Development of novel antimicrobial therapies and diagnostic tools.
  • Strategies utilizing probiotics, postbiotics, nanotechnology, and controlled-release systems for managing pathogenic species and restoring microbial balance.
  • Insights into microbial communication and interspecies interactions within biofilms.

Through this Special Issue, we aim at spotlighting cutting-edge research and fostering a deeper understanding of the mechanisms driving oral health and disease. We encourage submissions that explore these areas, contributing to the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in dentistry.

We look forward to your valuable contributions to this exciting and rapidly evolving field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
