Dear Colleagues,
Lifestyle-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cancers, are commonly caused by drinking alcohol, drug abuse, smoking tobacco, and obesity, as well as a lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating. Although these diseases are the leading cause of death in the civilized countries, they could be minimized through an improvement of lifestyle. Therefore, the early diagnosis of these diseases based on the analysis of effective biomarkers is crucial for human healthcare and successful therapy. Recently, it has been reported that oxidative stress and glycative stress can trigger these diseases, and various biomarkers can be measured in various biological fluids, including serum/plasma, urine, saliva, hair, and exhaled breath condensate, in combination with chromatography and detection systems. However, the concentrations of these biomarkers in biological samples are very low, and time-consuming and troublesome sample preparation procedures are required. Thus, highly efficient techniques involved with the extraction and enrichment, separation, and sensitive and selective detection are required for the reliable determination of these biomarkers in complex biological samples. On the basis of such groundwork, hopefully, in the future, unprecedented new procedures and tools for sample preparation and determination will be developed by both experts of analytical instrumentation and methodology.
This Special Issue will cover a wide range of topics on the chromatographic analysis of biomarkers in various diseases related to lifestyle, aging, and stress. Analytical systems include noninvasive sampling; sample preparation (solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, etc.); and the new development of chromatographic separation, mass spectrometry, and other detection techniques. I hope that scientists will find the selected up-to-date topics regarding biomarker analysis of interest, and that additional ideas and new technologies may emerge from this Special Issue.
