Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
A myriad of challenges persist in the realm of oral surgery and implant dentistry despite advancements in technology and techniques. These challenges necessitate innovative approaches and solutions to ensure optimal patient outcomes and continued progress.
One pressing challenge lies in the realm of implantology, where the long-term success of dental implants relies on factors such as osseointegration, biomechanical stability, and peri-implant tissue health. Achieving predictable outcomes in implant placement and restoration requires a thorough understanding of bone physiology, implant design, and surgical protocols. Complications such as peri-implantitis, implant failure, and inadequate bone volume present ongoing challenges that demand interdisciplinary collaboration and continued research efforts.
Furthermore, the management of complex oral and maxillofacial surgeries presents its own set of challenges. From orthognathic surgery to facial trauma reconstruction, these procedures require meticulous planning, precise execution, and a comprehensive understanding of facial aesthetics and function. Additionally, integrating digital technologies, such as computer-aided surgical planning and navigation systems, introduces both opportunities and complexities in treatment planning and execution.
Another significant challenge facing the field is ensuring equitable access to advanced oral surgical care. Disparities in access to care, particularly in underserved communities, hinder the delivery of optimal treatment and contribute to oral health inequalities. Addressing these disparities requires innovative approaches to care delivery, community outreach, and workforce development.
In response to these challenges, ongoing research endeavors aim to explore novel treatment modalities, refine surgical techniques, and improve patient care pathways. Collaboration among clinicians, researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers is essential to address current challenges and drive innovation in oral surgery and implant dentistry.
We are therefore interested in articles that investigate the topic “Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry: Current Challenges”. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Peri-implantitis: etiology, prevention, and management strategies.
- Advances in bone augmentation techniques for implant placement.
- Precision medicine approaches in oral surgery: personalized treatment planning.
- Minimally invasive techniques in oral surgery: benefits and limitations.
- Management of complications in dental implant surgery: strategies and outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Oral is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
