Dear Colleagues,
Many of the Lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, and estuaries host a very high level of biodiversity and furnishes essential services for human societies, yet they are specifically threatened by global changes. In the last few decades, the use of remote sensing for aquatic ecosystems monitoring has steadily increased. As a result, several remote sensing-based indicators have been developed to follow water quality, hydrological, hydrodynamics, and biological communities, and many advances are expected, especially with the advent of high- to very-high-resolution multispectral and spatial imagery, such as that provided by the sentinel or planet constellation. However, much of the work carried out so far has focused on continental waters in temperate zones, and in this Special Issue, we would like to collect work on tropical or subtropical environments, and more particularly around four main themes:
- Remote sensing indicators of aquatic ecosystem water quality and ecology with focus on plankton, aquatic macrophytes, nonalgal particles, nutrients, carbon;
- Coupling process-based modeling and remote sensing information;
- Remote sensing information as the base for an early warning aquatic ecosystem change;
- Remote sensing hydrology, hydrodynamics, and heat and energy fluxes in shallow aquatic ecosystems.
