Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is one of the modern technological revolutions that enables communication amongst a plethora of different devices. The IoT is essential in implementing various visions such as smart cities, smart buildings, and industry 4.0. Although IoT applications are now spreading throughout everyday life, they are still organised vertically in an isolated manner. The distributed interconnection of IoT devices is still a challenge since devices have different communication protocols, heterogeneous hardware, and different security capabilities and belong to different domains.
To date, some solutions have been proposed but are mainly based on a logically centralised infrastructure. This introduces a single trusted party that prevents data democratisation and holds all sensitive data. A centralised solution also limits scalability.
This Special Issue aims to collect papers on conceptual and practical approaches for building secure and decentralised IoT applications.
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Latest tools and methodologies that underpin the design and implementation of IoT applications.
- Use of blockchain for designing and building decentralised and secure IoT applications.
- Industrial case studies.
- State of the art and future perspectives about the design, validation, and implementation of decentralised and secure IoT applications.
This Special Issue will critically review most aspects of various technologies and methodologies such as distributed ledger technologies and smart contracts for the IoT; simulation, modelling, and programming frameworks; machine learning; testing; edge computing; federated learning; and real-life case studies for building decentralised and secure IoT applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
