Dear Colleagues,
An estuary is an important pathway between upstream rivers and coastal seas. Estuaries are one of the most productive ecosystems on the earth, as evidenced by the fact that about 60% of the world’s population lives along estuaries and coast regions. Estuaries present different kinds of physical processes to produce a complex environment of water levels, tidal currents, and salinity and temperature fields that vary spatially and temporally. Freshwater discharge from upriver reaches the estuary and provides necessary foods including nutrients and phytoplankton, dilutes contaminants, maintains suitable salinity for shrimps and juvenile fishes, sustains habitats, and allows fishes to spawn and move to different habitat environments. Therefore, climate change and anthropogenic effects on estuarine physics, water quality, and ecosystems should be given more attention. Furthermore, using numerical models to evaluate estuarine environments and in-depth management has become increasingly more important. Before applying models for evaluation and management, it is critical to calibrate and validate the measured data to the models.
The Special Issue provides a platform to explore model calibration, validation, and evaluation for estuarine environmental research. Papers on numerical modeling and field observation to support model calibration, validation, and evaluation on estuarine environments are highly welcomed in this Special Issue.
