Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The objective of this Special Issue is to collect a series of works that offer an updated picture of the solutions and experiences on ICT technologies used in the management of urban waste. The progressive urbanization of the world population, combined with the uncontrolled growth of the per capita production of waste, has meant that waste management represents a challenge shared by all countries of the world, with criticalities that vary from one area to another and which, especially in less-industrialized countries, takes on dramatic tones. Furthermore, due to the transport processes through the atmosphere, rivers and sea currents, the effects of pollution caused locally are always reflected on a global scale.

ICT technologies can offer a key not so much to define a general solution to the problem, but rather to build a complex of particular solutions that are easily replicable, with the common goal of creating a circular economy, in which the idea of waste disappears. In principle, any waste material can be reused in the same process from which it derives, with a consequent savings of energy and raw materials, and a reduction in the impact on the environment. The degree to which this principle can be implemented largely depends on the ability to manage a large mass of information, hence the strategic role of ICT technologies. In fact, it was found that the effectiveness of actions depends above all on the degree of involvement of the population, rather than on the use of sophisticated technologies for waste treatment. For this reason, an efficient waste management system must first of all guarantee a widespread communication system with citizens, and secondly must be able to manage the flows of materials with the IoT paradigm.

In this Special Issue, contributions will be collected concerning both the state of the art of information technologies used successfully in waste management, and the analysis of the potential in relation to the areas of the world where the problem of waste is most felt, taking into account that these are characterized by limited financial resources. The works in which the economic aspects related to the proposed solutions are analyzed are particularly welcome.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
