Dear Colleagues,
Continuous urbanization has significantly increased energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. As one of the largest sectors in terms of energy consumption, buildings consume 30% to 75% of primary energy. With the development of sensing technology and internet of things (IOT), an increasing amount of data is collected in buildings. How to analyze these data to improve the energy efficiency of buildings becomes a critical challenge for sustainable development.
Many efforts have been made to improve the building energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions at different stages of the building lifecycle. At the design stage, some passive or sustainable technologies are considered, such as architectural shading, natural ventilation, passive cooling, daylighting, etc. Renewable energy has been widely used in buildings, including photovoltaics, solar thermal systems, geothermal heat pumps, etc. In addition, electricity or thermal energy storage systems are typically applied to handle the uncertainty of renewable systems and, hence, ensure the success of building and renewable energy integration. Building energy modeling and data analysis can help to optimize sustainable design for new constructions. At the operation stage, building energy analysis is essential for building control optimization to promote energy efficiency. With the advancement and widespread adoption of information technology, the big data analysis and machine learning methods (clustering, deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc.) have been increasingly utilized to support applications relevant to buildings, such as optimal control, fault detection and diagnosis, building occupancy detection, energy prediction, etc. At the retrofit stage, building energy modeling can facilitate the evaluation of energy conservation measures for existing buildings. Advanced HVAC systems are being developed to replace the original systems and achieve improved building energy performance.
This Special Issue focuses on recent research in building energy analysis for sustainability. The scope includes the above mentioned topics. The aim of this issue is to provide an interactive platform and share current ideas from experts in the related fields.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
