Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Buildings are the largest contributor to climate change, and a significant fraction of this energy is consumed to provide comfortable, habitable, healthy conditions. The majority of these buildings are not only designed without wide consultation with the local community, but also with the use of technological themes that are recognised as energy-intensive solutions.
Furthermore, fears about climate change and global warming have added urgency to the search for innovative building designs and methods to improve energy efficiency in buildings. These designs and methods should satisfy the social and cultural needs of communities in different contexts and climates.
The whole systems’ approach to the landscape or urbanism design of the community needs to incorporate sustainable building design and energy efficiency principles. As such, energy-efficient buildings and sustainable designs are crucial instruments to lower total costs associated with carbon emission mitigation while promoting social and economic advancement, improving energy security, quality of life, and the wellbeing of people and the environment.
Considering the importance of the theme 'Innovations in Sustainable Building Design and Energy', the Journal of Sustainability has decided to dedicate a Special Issue to bringing together manuscripts that focus on building design and energy efficiency strategies to enhance environmental and social sustainability for buildings and urban environments.
We are looking for original articles that address the following topics:
- Approaches towards sustainable building design and improving energy efficiency in buildings;
- The enhancement of operational and maintenance practises to improve indoor air quality and create a healthy, comfortable environment while minimising energy consumption;
- The impact of research on quality of life and wellbeing in the urban environment;
- The impact of retrofit pathways in the transition to a Net Zero carbon-built environment;
- Computer simulation and modelling;
- Case studies of successful real-life scenarios, including those that cover various research methodological approaches with an emphasis on sustainable communities.
Original papers that address other related topics with evidence of their contribution to the state of the art are also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
