Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sustainable mobility is now a well-known concept transforming cities and regional areas through the promotion of active travel and collective transport modes. Recent technological advancements such as autonomous driving are expected to revolutionize travel behavior and social interactions, thus influencing sustainable mobility schemes. In particular, shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) are expected to play a transformative role in future transport systems by reducing vehicle ownership, enhancing accessibility and road safety, mitigating congestion, and freeing-up public space. However, the deployment of SAVs might also raise concerns about affordability, social equity, and inclusivity. Thus, new research should give emphasis to strategic approaches that deal with these challenges, while simultaneously appraising the potential benefits of SAVs in sustainable mobility schemes.
The aim of this Special Issue (SI) is to explore various strategic planning scenarios that integrate SAVs into urban and regional contexts with the aim of truly enhancing sustainable and fair mobility. As planning implications related to SAVs have not yet been thoroughly investigated, this SI aspires to enrich the ongoing scientific debate. For instance, this SI could be a “forum” for outlining new pathways, innovative methods, and original findings that could guide academia and policymakers. Bearing in mind that enhancing sustainable mobility will bring about diverse economic, social, and environmental benefits, this Special Issue completely aligns with the principles of sustainability.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Specifically, the submission of conceptual papers, methodological papers, empirical studies, simulation modelling, surveys or interviews, comparative analysis papers, and case studies is encouraged. Research topics may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Strategic planning in urban areas;
- Regional mobility and SAVs;
- Accessibility and equity implications of integrating SAVs into the transport system;
- Multimodal scenario planning;
- Perceived insights on SAVs and strategic planning ;
- Impacts of strategic planning scenarios incorporating SAVs;
- Participatory approaches to strategic planning for SAVs.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
