Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Rural tourism can be defined as a type of activities that a visitor can enjoy featuring a wide range of products mostly linked to nature-based activities. Generally, rural tourism activities take place in non-urban (rural) areas with specified characteristics such as low population density, agriculture and forestry landscape, and traditional lifestyle. This type of tourism includes rural lifestyle tourism, rural cultural and heritage tourism, rural health tourism, rural active tourism, scenic landscapes, traditional crafts, and rural agro-tourism. From an economic point of view, rural tourism brings numerous benefits to tourists and rural communities, in particular, diversification of farm income, job creation, and retention of services in rural areas, thus preventing depopulation. However, negative consequences can occur, such as physical damage to ecosystems caused by too many visitors and pressure on local infrastructure. Indeed, the EU strongly supports the tourism sector and the sustainable principles of rural tourism to reduce energy consumption, waste, water consumption, and pollution and meet the increasing demand for sustainable tourism. Rural tourism can face challenges such as inadequate transport, water and sewage capacity, depopulation, etc.. Recently, up-to-date scientific data and equipment, such as remote sensing techniques, GIS tools, in situ measurements, engineering models, etc., played a significant role in the field of rural tourism challenges detection and mitigation. This Special Issue encourages scientists that are interested in using new technologies to balance rural tourism needs, the economic situation, and achieving good environmental biodiversity to publish articles. In addition, the scientific articles should lead to a developmental strategy to enable a rural community to grow, achieve sustainable rural tourism development, and preserve the natural environment. In general, this Special Issue is interested in, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Detection of rural tourism risks and challenges.
  • Proposed ideas for rural tourism region development and enhancement.
  • Human (land use changes) and natural (climate change) risks to rural tourism.
  • Rural tourism risk mitigation and adaptation based on the advantages of new technology.
  • Proposed plans for sustainable rural tourism.
  • Suggested new criteria to the formal criteria of rural tourism.
  • Adding new suggested areas to the list of rural tourism regions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
