Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM)/ Wire Arc Directed Energy Deposition (WA-DED) is increasingly recognized as game-changing technology in the realm of additive manufacturing (AM). By leveraging an electric arc as the heat source and a metal wire as the feedstock, WAAM presents unique advantages, including high deposition rates, material versatility, and cost efficiency. This Special Issue invites contributions that explore the latest innovations, future directions, and applications of WAAM in industry.

We welcome submissions that highlight recent advances in WAAM process development, material innovations, and industrial applications, spanning sectors such as aerospace, automotive, energy, and biomedical. This Special Issue aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform where academic researchers and industry practitioners can contribute and share their pioneering insights and practical experiences.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Process Development and Optimization: Novel methodologies in WAAM, hybrid processes, advancements in process parameters, multi-wire WAAM;
  • Process Monitoring and Control: Intelligent systems, real-time monitoring, closed-loop control strategies for enhancing the accuracy and reliability of WAAM components;
  • Material Development: Investigations into new alloy systems, microstructural evolution, hybrid material solutions, and their mechanical performance;
  • Sustainability and Efficiency: Research focusing on reducing material waste, energy consumption, and cost in WAAM processes;
  • Multi-Material and Complex Structures: Applications and challenges in multi-material printing using WAAM, particularly in the production of functionally graded or multi-functional components;
  • Case Studies and Applications: Industry success stories showcasing how WAAM has been implemented, its scalability, and its contribution to sustainable manufacturing practices.

We invite full-length research papers, communications, and review articles that push the boundaries of WAAM, opening new pathways for its application in mainstream manufacturing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Technologies is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
