Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The emergence of pathogenic bacteria, which cannot be effectively treated with current drugs, has been prioritized by the WHO as one of humanity's top ten global public health threats. Fighting this threat is a priority that requires a global approach across multiple sectors beyond healthcare, including the food supply chain and the environment. Antibiotic-resistant infections are linked to significant morbidity and mortality, and in 2019, they were estimated to contribute to 4.95 million deaths worldwide. Moreover, according to some projections, infections due to antimicrobial-resistant pathogens will be responsible for more deaths than cancer or diabetes in a matter of decades. As COVID-19 rages on, the pandemic of antimicrobial resistance continues in the shadows. Understanding antimicrobial resistance is crucial in developing new antimicrobial drugs to tackle drug-resistant bacteria.

Thus, this Special Issue aims to encourage submissions on the novel mechanisms and evolution of antimicrobial resistance, the epidemiology and surveillance of resistance in the clinical setting, clinical applications of current and novel antimicrobials, and strategies to prevent the emergence and dissemination of resistance, especially from regions of the world where epidemiological data are scarce.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Vaccines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
