Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors have presented an overview of free-space optical communication from mirrors and optical telegraph to modern wireless systems, and have outlined the future development directions of optical communications. The manuscript is interesting and useful for the design of optical communication systems, and is acceptable to be published in Future Internet, provided the following issue can be addressed

  1. Some abbreviations should be clarified when they appear for the first time.
  2. It is suggested to change all figures with a white background.
  3. Specify some records of FSO systems in a table.
  4. Add some discussions regarding the technical bottlenecks of the FSO systems

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper needs minor revision. Comments as follows:

1) page 2, line 49: the capital letter E before the word it should be deleted.

2) page 4, line 129-131: a reference should be added at this point.

3) page 9, line 250: more references than [52-56] should be added as this is a vast field of extensive research and many significant papers have contributed to the study of the effect of the atmospheric turbulence on FSO performance.

4) page 11, line 320: The title must be in bold and numbered.

5) page 12, line 368: The title must be in bold and numbered.

6) Equations (1)-(3) should be written in mathematical (not text) form.
