Supplement Intake in Recreational Vegan, Vegetarian, and Omnivorous Endurance Runners—Results from the NURMI Study (Step 2)
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
I would expand on the definition of vegan in line 143 of page 3 to specify the exclusion of all animal products including dairy, eggs, and animal by-products, if that's the case.
This study is relevant because it addresses an area of science that is specific and not well-researched. As a sports dietitian, I see clients who are moving more and more towards plant-based or vegan dietary patterns. Having more data on what this means for performance, and more importantly for health, is welcomed. A popular question for athletes is supplemental use. Again, there are not a lot of trials that show the effectiveness of supplement use in endurance athletes; however, athletes continue to consume products promising various claims. More data are welcome on supplemental use on athletes who follow different dietary patterns, which this study has provided.

In the current paper, the authors have studied the supplemental intake patterns between Vegan, Vegetarian and Omnivorous endurance runners. The paper seem consistent with proper discussion about the data.
