Effect of Controlled Atmosphere Storage Conditions on the Chemical Composition of Super Hardy Kiwifruit
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This study reports the chemical compositional differences between unripe hardy kiwifruit cultivar at harvest and the effect of controlled atmosphere storage condition on fruit ripening.
In my opinion, the experimental plan is scientifically sound and the analyses carried out help readers to reach a comprehensive understanding. Nevertheless, some points have to be better clarified in the methodology and exposure of the results.
In particular, consider the following suggestions:
Please consider the addition of transitional words to build up coherent relationships within the text.
Line 14: ‘but it is possible to store ripe fruit for only 2 weeks at 0–14 5°C’. I understand that the fruit is harvest unripe, but since this study was done with storage for 6 weeks, this sentence in the abstract without better explanation is confusing. Please consider rewriting the sentence.
Line 15: Please add the word: ‘The aim of this research’
Line 17: If possible, add the different air compositions, or at least the gases used (O2, N2 and CO2).
Line 77: Why the fruits were harvested 60-65 DAFB and not later? Report more information and/or previous studies with harvest in the same period for the same region or climate.
Line 83: Please add more information on how the gas chamber concentrations were delivered and controlled.
Line 89: How many fruits were considered at each sampling date?
Line 111: ‘A comparison’ and ‘with Fisher’s LSD test’
Line 113: ‘a statistically’
Line 120: Please cut ‘such factors as the’ from the sentence
Line 122-123: please specify that the significant differences were between cultivars.
Line 131: I would like to propose to change ‘harvested fruit’ for ‘at harvest’ do distinguish these fruits from those sampled after storage.
Line 141: Starting this sentence with ‘Since’ would make the message more clear.
Line 142: Starting this sentence with ‘In this study’ would make the reading more clear.
Line 150: Please consider revising this concept: ‘the soluble component of the DM is the SSC’
Line 154-156: Please consider split this sentence in two.
Line 181: Since there is the assumption that all cultivars studied were grown in the same field and under the same climacteric conditions, the differences in light intensity during the growing season are not enough to justify differences between cultivars. A brief discussion on the possible differences in enzymatic pathways involved in the synthesis and oxidation of ascorbic acid between different cultivars should be added.
Line 204: Decrease an average of 4%
Line 206-208: Is this sentence the beginning of next paragraph? If yes, please write: If fruit and vegetables are maintained in their optimum atmospheres, the retention of ascorbic acid and other vitamins results in a better nutritional quality (8).
Line 224-225: The reference is a study on A. arguta. Please, report a study on A. kolomikta.
Line 238-240: Both sentences are contradictory. Chamber No.1 do not presented the biggest increase.
Line 187 and 191: Is the interaction between cultivars and storage time significant? It is not clear. If interaction is not significant please add that information. If the interaction is significant, Table 2 and 3 should be rearranged reporting the values of each parameter for each cultivar at each sampling time.
Author Response
Line 14: the sentence has been rewritten: '..., but it is possible to store ripe fruit for a very short time, only 2 weeks at 0-5C. Therefore, it is necessary to determine optimal storage conditions to prolong fruit storage time.'
Line 15: word added:
'The aim of this research'
Line 17: the different air compositions were added:
'(No. 1 - 21% O2, 78% N2; No. 2 - 0.5% O2, 98.5% N2, 1% CO2; No. 3 - 1.5% O2, 95.5% N2, 3% CO2; No. 4 - 2% O2, 93% N2, 5% CO2)'
Line 77: Why the fruits were harvested 60-65 DAFB and not later? Report more information and/or previous studies with harvest in the same period for the same region or climate.
Information was added: '... when, according to recommendations, the soluble solids content was between 9.0 and 10.5 %, depending on the cultivar [4].'

Line 83: Please add more information on how the gas chamber concentrations were delivered and controlled.
The explanation added: 'Required values of temperature, humidity and air composition were set up, measured, controlled and maintained automatically.'
Line 89: How many fruits were considered at each sampling date?
The explanation added: '1 kg laboratory sample was made for each cultivar fruit.'
The mistake in line 79 was corrected:
'The fruit in the boxes, 4 × 10.0 kg for each cultivar,..'
Line 111: ‘A comparison’ and ‘with Fisher’s LSD test’
The correction was made: 'A comparison of means was performed with Fisher’s LSD test.'
Line 113: ‘a statistically’
The correction was made: 'that investigated factors had a statistically significant effect...'
Line 120: Please cut ‘such factors as the’ from the sentence
The correction was made: '...are known to vary with variety or cultivar,...'
Line 122-123: please specify that the significant differences were between cultivars.
The correction was made: 'Significant differences between cultivars were observed in the dry matter,...'
Line 131: I would like to propose to change ‘harvested fruit’ for ‘at harvest’ do distinguish these fruits from those sampled after storage.
The title of the table was corrected: 'Chemical composition of Actinidia kolomikta fruit at harvest'
Line 141: Starting this sentence with ‘Since’ would make the message more clear.
The correction was made: 'Since the fruit of A. kolomikta, like A. deliciosa, are harvested unripe and left to ripen before consumption.'
Line 142: Starting this sentence with ‘In this study’ would make the reading more clear.
The sentence was corrected: 'In this study the DM content increased in the course of the ripening process.'
Line 150: Please consider revising this concept: ‘the soluble component of the DM is the SSC’
The correction was made, part of the sentence deleted: 'The DM content and SSC are closely related.'
Line 154-156: Please consider split this sentence in two.
The correction was made and sentence split in two: 'Researchers assert that such changes are expected given that approximately 80% of the kiwifruit dry matter is carbohydrates. When fruit are unripe that is sugar and starch, and mostly sugar when fully ripe [8].'
Corrections were made: 'Studies of kiwifruit genetic factors indicated that the accumulation of ascorbic acid showed a relatively high heritability [3]. The researchers found that the level of GDP-L-galactose phosphorylase in various genotypes of kiwifruit correlated with ascorbic acid content during fruit development [3]. Meanwhile, the content of ascorbic acid depends on the clones, and decrease during storage [11].'

Line 204: Decrease an average of 4%
The correction was made: 'The ascorbic acid content decreased an average of 4% after 2 weeks of storage.'
Line 206-208: Is this sentence the beginning of next paragraph? If yes, please write: If fruit and vegetables are maintained in their optimum atmospheres, the retention of ascorbic acid and other vitamins results in a better nutritional quality (8).
The corrections of the sentence were made: "If fruit and vegetables are maintained in their optimum atmospheres, the retention of ascorbic acid and other vitamins results in a better nutritional quality [9].'
Line 224-225: The reference is a study on A. arguta. Please, report a study on A. kolomikta.
An additional reference was indicated: 'According to other researchers, the kiwiberry contains between 2.6 and 4.2 mg 100 g-1 FW of chlorophyll [13, 14].'
Line 238-240: Both sentences are contradictory. Chamber No.1 do not presented the biggest increase.
The sentence was revised: 'But during storage, the content of pigments increased most in fruit stored in the chamber (No. 1) with 21% CO2 compared with fruit at harvest.’
Line 187 and 191: Is the interaction between cultivars and storage time significant? It is not clear. If interaction is not significant please add that information. If the interaction is significant, Table 2 and 3 should be rearranged reporting the values of each parameter for each cultivar at each sampling time.
The results of the statistical analysis were corrected in Table 2 and 3.
In section 3.2. the discussion was supplemented:
Line 164: ʽLaibaʼ fruit distinguished significantly.’
Line 167: ‘In this chamber after 6 weeks of storage the DM content in fruit differed significantly.’
Line 183: ‘The interaction between the SSC in the fruit of all cultivars and 6 weeks of the storage time was significant.’
Line 188: ‘After 2 weeks of storage significant differed ʽPaukštės Šakarvaʼ and ʽLankėʼ fruit, after 4 weeks of storage significant differed ʽLandėʼ and ʽLaibaʼ fruit. After 6 weeks of storage, the interaction was observed with three cultivars except for ʽLankėʼ fruit.’
Line 197: ‘The significant interactions were determined between the 6 weeks of storage time and air compositions in all chambers except chamber No. 1 (21% O2, 78% N2) (Table 3).’
Line 200: ‘Between air composition of chamber No. 4 and the 6 weeks of storage time were established significant differences.’
Line 232: ‘Significant differences between cultivars and storage time were not established except AA content in ʽLaibaʼ fruit and the 2 weeks of storage time.’
Line 245: ‘Significant interactions were found between the AA content of the fruit stored in chambers No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and the 6 weeks of storage time when the AA content was the least.’
Line 275: A significant interaction was found between the 2 weeks of storage time and the TCh content of ʽPaukštės Šakarvaʼ fruit. Analysis of the interaction between carotenoid content of different cultivars and storage time showed that there were significant differences between the TCar of ʽLankėʼ fruit and the 2 weeks of storage time and between the TCar of ʽLaibaʼ fruit and the 6 weeks of storage time.
Line 281: ‘After 2 weeks of storage, the significant interaction was established between storage time and total pigments concentration in fruit stored in the chamber No. 2 and between the storage time and TCar content in fruit stored in the chamber No. 4 (Table 3).’
Reviewer 2 Report

- Change “the amount of pigments was calculated” in “the amount of pigments was calculated as described by…”
- Lines 122-123: use abbrevation for dry matter, ascorbic acid, total chlorophyll and total carotenoid contents.
- Line 124: remove “The soluble solids content”
- Line 125: use abbreviation for dry matter and total carotenoid
- Line 125: Laiba has not the greatest amount of TCar but there is no statistically significant difference with Paukštės
- Lines 144-145 the sentence is not clear
- check the percentage values reported in the text. For example in line 144: are values 5%, 10% and 9%? Probably are 9%, 12%, 17% and 12% respectively? In line 148: is the value 24%? Probably is 32%. Line 162: are values 24%, 31%, 45% and 29%? Probably are 25%, 29%, 35% and 28% respectevely?.....etc….
- Line 183: change 4811.36 in 3888.97
- Paragraphs 3.2 and 3.3 are written confusingly. I suggest to streamle it in content

Thank you for the comments.
Round 2
Reviewer 1 Report
The expression of ‘harvested fruit’ was changed to ‘fruit at harvest’ only on table 1, and not throughout the paper. Is still not clear during the discussion when the authors are referring to the fruit ‘at harvest’ moment, or to the differences between cultivars during storage. Even if the discussion is separated in different chapter, the text can be improved to be clearer.
During the discussion, the separation between the results of cultivars during storage (table 2) and the results of cultivars in different chambers (table 3) is still confusing. Please choose an order of discussion of those results and repeat it for each variable.
Here are some of the improvements that can be addressed in this aspect:
Line 199: ‘In this study the DM content increased in the course of the ripening process in all cultivars of 199 fruit stored in all chambers (Table 2).’ This sentence should be the beginning of the discussion on DM content differences between chambers, after line 203.
Having into account this added sentence in line 199 and since the interactions between cultivars and chambers are not presented in table 3; I assume that the interaction between cultivars and chambers were not significant for all variables studied. There is need for several sentences along the discussion explaining that. If the interaction is significant, table 3 should be changed, representing the interaction.
Line 203: ʽLaibaʼ fruit distinguished significantly.
Is hard to understand to which cultivar, storage, chamber, or variable ‘Laiba’ fruit is significantly different. Please incorporate this information with the previous sentences if that is the case.
Line 204 and 206: Please take the parenthesis to chamber number in these lines.
Line 205-207: ‘The largest average increase (32%) in DM content of all the investigated cultivars was found in chamber (No. 4) with 2% O2 + 5% CO2 (Table 3). In this chamber after 6 weeks of storage the DM content in fruit differed significantly.’
Please modify this sentence to: ‘All chambers presented a significant increase in DM content in fruit. The largest average increase (32%) in DM content of all the investigated cultivars was found in chamber No. 4 with 2% O2 + 5% CO2 (Table 3).’ Please follow the same or similar structure in all Results & Discussion session for simplification and easy readability.
Author Response
Corrections were made:
Line 175-176: ‘Statistical analysis of our data shows that, for fruit at harvest,…’
Line 195-196: ‘The overall SSC increased by 42% compared to the SSC of fruit at harvest.’
Line 214-215: ‘In this study the greatest amount of AA at harvest…’
Line 234-238: ‘In our study, the highest content of AA was observed in A. kolomikta fruit at harvest and decreased during the fruit ripening process. The AA content decreased an average of 4% after 2 weeks of storage, 7% after 4 weeks of storage, and 26% after 6 weeks of storage compared to fruit at harvest (Table 1 and Table 2).’
Line 261-262: “In our study the amounts of TCh and TCar in the fruit of various cultivars of A. kolomikta at harvest differed significantly …’
Line 268-271: ‘The TCh and TCar contents in A. kolomikta fruit after 6 weeks of storage were several times higher than in the fruit at harvest. After 6 weeks of storage, the TCh content was higher by an average 2-fold, and the TCar content was higher by an average 4-fold, compared to the fruit at harvest (Table 1 and Table 2).’
Line 296-298: ‘The most ascorbic acid content was observed in A. kolomikta fruit at harvest and decreased during the fruit ripening process regardless on the air composition in the storage chambers.’
2. During the discussion, the separation between the results of cultivars during storage (table 2) and the results of cultivars in different chambers (table 3) is still confusing. Please choose an order of discussion of those results and repeat it for each variable.
Corrections were made:
162-163: ‘In this study the DM content increased in the course of the ripening process in all cultivars of fruit (Table 2).’
Line 169-170: ‘Chambers with 1.5% O2, + 3% CO2 (chamber No. 3) and 2% O2 + 5% CO2 (chamber No. 4) presented a significant increase in DM content in fruit (Table 3).’
Line 183-186: ‘The significant increase in SSC was observed in the fruit of all the cultivars stored for 6 weeks in a controlled atmosphere and reached on average 34% in ʽLandėʼ, 41% in ʽLankėʼ, 55% in ʽLaibaʼ, and 39% in ʽPaukštės Šakarvaʼ fruit (Table 1 and Table 2).’
Line 189-190: ‘The greatest increase in SSC in A. kolomikta fruit of approximately 20% was observed after 2 weeks of storage (Tables 2 and 3).’
193-195: ‘After 4 weeks, the SSC increased by an average of 12% in all chambers compared to the SSC after 2 weeks of storage; after 6 weeks, the SSC increased only 6% compared to the SSC after 4 weeks of storage (Table 3).’
Line 236-238: ‘The AA content decreased an average of 4% after 2 weeks of storage, 7% after 4 weeks of storage, and 26% after 6 weeks of storage compared to fruit at harvest (Table 1 and Table 2).’
Line 238-239 the sentence moved from line 254-255.
‘After 6 weeks of storage, the highest content of ascorbic acid was found in ʽLandėʼ and ʽPaukštės Šakarvaʼ fruit.’
Line 283-286: ‘All chambers presented a significant increase in pigments content in fruit at the end of storage except chamber with 2% O2 + 5% CO2 (chamber No. 4) (Table 3). The data show that greatest amounts of pigments in fruit after 6 weeks were found in an atmosphere with 0.5% O2 + 1% CO2 and 1.5% O2 + 3% CO2 (chamber No. 2 and No. 3).’
Corrected as follows:
Line: 162-163: ‘In this study the DM content increased in the course of the ripening process in all cultivars of fruit (Table 2).’ It is the beginning of the discussion on DM content differences between cultivars.
Line 169-170: ‘Chambers with 1.5% O2, + 3% CO2 (chamber No. 3) and 2% O2 + 5% CO2 (chamber No. 4) presented a significant increase in DM content in fruit (Table 3).’ This sentence is the beginning of the discussion on DM content differences between chambers.
Corrections were made:
Line 169-170: ‘Chambers with 1.5% O2, + 3% CO2 (chamber No. 3) and 2% O2 + 5% CO2 (chamber No. 4) presented a significant increase in DM content in fruit (Table 3).’
Line 196-198: ‘After 6 weeks in chamber No. 2 with 0.5% O2 + 1% CO2 a significant decline in the SSC of ʽLankėʼ and ʽLaibaʼ fruit was observed. All chambers presented a significant increase in SSC in fruit after 6 weeks of storage.’
Line 201-202: ‘The interaction between cultivars DM and SSC and chambers were not significant for all cultivars studied.’
Line 248-256: ‘All chambers presented a significant decrease in AA content in fruit within 6 storage weeks. The lowest AA content after 6 weeks was found in fruit stored in an atmosphere with 0.5% O2 + 1% CO2 (chamber No. 2). The interaction between cultivars and chambers were not significant for AA content if fruit.’
Line 273-277: ‘During storage in different controlled atmospheres, the content of pigments in various cultivars of A. kolomikta fruit changed unequally but the interaction between cultivars and chambers were not significant. The greatest amounts of pigments were observed in ʽLankėʼ fruit after 2 weeks, and in ʽLaibaʼ fruit after 4 and 6 weeks of storage (Table 2).’
2 and No. 3).’
Line 288-291: ‘During storage, the average content of pigments increased most in fruit stored in an atmosphere with 0.5% O2 + 1% CO2 (chamber No. 2) and least in an atmosphere with 21% O2 (chamber No. 1) compared to fruit at harvest.’
Line 301-304: ‘The different air parameters in the storage chambers had different effects on the synthesis of pigments in fruit, but the content of pigments increased most in fruit stored in the chamber with atmospheric parameters 0.5% O2 + 1% CO2.’
5. Line 203: ʽLaibaʼ fruit distinguished significantly. Is hard to understand to which cultivar, storage, chamber, or variable ‘Laiba’ fruit is significantly different. Please incorporate this information with the previous sentences if that is the case.
Line 166-167: ʽLaibaʼ fruit distinguished significantly from all investigated cultivars.’
6. Line 204 and 206: Please take the parenthesis to chamber number in these lines.
The sentence was deleted.
‘Between air composition of chamber No. 4 and the 6 weeks of storage time were established significant differences.’
In the firth revision, you wrote: ‘Line 187 and 191: Is the interaction between cultivars and storage time significant? It is not clear. If interaction is not significant please add that information. …’
We wrote that to respond to your comment, but we try to follow your suggestion:
Line 168-170: ‘Chambers with 1.5% O2 + 3% CO2 (chamber No. 3) and 2% O2 + 5% CO2 (chamber No. 4) presented a significant increase in DM content in fruit (Table 3). The largest average increase (32%) in DM content of all the investigated cultivars was found in chamber (No. 4) with 2% O2 + 5% CO2.’
Line 165-167: ‘After 6 weeks of storage developed a significant increase in DM content in all cultivars except ʽLankėʼ fruit (Table 2).’
Line 234-236: ‘In our study, the highest content of AA was observed in A. kolomikta fruit at harvest and decreased significantly in all cultivars during the fruit ripening process.’
Line 281-282: ‘After 6 weeks of storage fixed a significant increase in pigments content in all cultivars fruit except ʽPaukštės Šakarvaʼ.’
The authors are grateful to the reviewer for the comprehensive review and remarks. Remarks have been taken into account and corrected. Corrections included in the text.
