A Comparative Analysis of the Interaction between Urban-Rural Construction Land Transition and Population Flow: Dominant and Recessive Perspectives
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The authors investigated the interaction between urban-rural construction land transition and population flow. The research methodologies are reasonable, and the findings are interesting. However, there are still some aspects that should be improved to make the paper publishable.
1.The author should focus mainly on the importance and significance of the study.
2.I suggest the authors to demonstrate what does the paper add to the current literature? and what new knowledge is added by this study?
3.Literature review part is need to be updated.
4.“Urban-rural construction land consists of urban construction land (UCL) and rural residential land (RRL)” in 2.1. The connotation of Urban-rural construction land is not clear and accurate. According to China's land use classification, the rural construction land component is not comprehensive just including rural residential land.
5. “The vector data for urban-rural construction land in this paper is obtained from the Annual Land Use Change Survey in 2010 and 2018 at 1:10,000 scale and newly expanded construction land data in 2019 and 2020, which are provided by the Hangzhou Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources.”in 3.2. Is the acquisition of basic data in 2020 reasonable in the study? Why not directly apply the data of the Third National Land Survey in 2019?
6. Figures such as Fig4 and Fig13 are actually tables. Change the name and place it above the corresponding table.

The article presents an insightful study on the interaction between urban-rural construction land transition and population flow in Hangzhou, China. The study's focus on dominant and recessive perspectives is interesting, and the article's structure is generally sound. However, there are some areas that could be improved for better clarity, organization, and theoretical grounding. The abstract needs to be more concise and focused. The introduction should better establish the research problem and its significance. The methodology could benefit from more elaboration on the specific methods used. The discussion needs to connect findings to the theoretical framework. The conclusion should more effectively summarize the key findings and their implications.
Abstract: The abstract is comprehensive, providing an overview of the study's focus on the interaction between urban-rural construction land transition and population flow. However, it could benefit from condensation to highlight key aspects such as the study area, the applied methodologies, and the main findings. By focusing on these elements, the abstract can provide a more concise representation of the research.
Introduction: The introduction provides historical context on urban-rural interaction and population flow, but it lacks a clear articulation of the research problem. To enhance its impact, the introduction should explicitly state the gap in the literature that the study addresses and the significance of understanding the interaction between urban-rural construction land transition and population flow. Consider formulating a research question or hypothesis to guide the reader's understanding of the study's purpose. In order to increase the internal validity of the article I am highly suggesting the following article to be cited in your article: Morphological and GIS-based land use Analysis: A Critical Exploration of a Rural Neighborhood,
Methodology: While the methodology is briefly described, it lacks specific details about the structured analysis method and the dynamic land utilization efficiency index. Providing step-by-step explanations of how these methods were applied would enhance the transparency and replicability of the study. In addition, including information about data sources, data collection, and data analysis procedures would strengthen the methodological foundation of the study.
Discussion: The discussion effectively presents the findings but misses the opportunity to connect them back to the theoretical framework established earlier. To address this, relate the results to the theoretical concepts introduced in the introduction. Explain how the identified patterns and trends align with or contribute to existing theories or conceptual frameworks related to urban-rural dynamics, population flow, and land utilization. By doing so, the discussion can better showcase the theoretical implications of the study.
Conclusion: The conclusion provides a summary of the findings and acknowledges the significance of the research, but it could be more focused. Clearly state the key findings regarding the interaction between urban-rural construction land transition and population flow in Hangzhou. Additionally, emphasize the practical implications of these findings for urban planning and development strategies. Suggest specific avenues for future research that can build upon the study's outcomes.
Structural and Theoretical Issues:
Condense the abstract to highlight the study's area, methodologies, and main findings.
Explicitly state the research problem and its significance in the introduction.
Provide detailed step-by-step explanations of the applied methodologies in the methodology section.
Relate the findings to the established theoretical framework in the discussion.
Clearly summarize the key findings and their practical implications in the conclusion.
Specific Comments:
In the abstract, focus on key elements: study area, methodologies, and main findings.
In the introduction, state the research problem and significance, possibly including a research question or hypothesis.
In the methodology, provide step-by-step explanations of the structured analysis method and dynamic land utilization efficiency index application, along with details about data sources and analysis procedures.
In the discussion, connect the findings to the theoretical framework introduced earlier and highlight the theoretical implications.
In the conclusion, succinctly summarize the key findings and their practical implications, and suggest specific directions for future research.

The manuscript has been sufficiently improved based on the given comments. It has been developed theoretically. The methodological part of the article has also been developed. It has now clearly stated contribution in the article. I can see that the internal validity of the revised manuscript has also been increased. From my point of view, the article is ready for publication.
