- I is the HAI incidence, that is the proportion of HAI occurrence every 100 admissions;
- P is the prevalence of patients with HAIs on the day of the PPS;
- LA is the average length of stay of hospitalized patients, extracted from each of the Sicilian PPSs;
- LN is the length of stay of patients with an HAI;
- INT is the length of stay before the onset of the HAI;
- The difference LN − INT is derived from the median number of days from HAI onset until the PPS day.
