Reviewer 2 Report

The paper "Stability analysis for an interface with continuous internal structure" by M. Modestov discusses a method that is not novel, and whose applications are also not new, but gives a general description of this method, which is claimed to be unavailable. More importantly, this general description is succinct (although detailed enough) and very clear. Furthermore, it is well complemented with two examples whose discussions are excellent. Therefore, the paper is more than worthy of publication in Fluids.

Nonetheless, the following are some suggestions that in the opinion of this reviewer would make the paper stronger.

The discussion of Fig 2 shows a discrepancy between the proposed method and numerical simulations. In practice, this discrepancy must be seen in terms of computational cost. So what is the computational cost of these numerical simulations (or similar ones) versus the cost of the proposed method?

In the discussion of Fig 3, it is shown that compressible flows are more unstable. Please put this discussion in the context of some past studies showing similar results, and do so while adding proper citations.

The following questions should be addressed in the "Discussion and conclusions": Will the proposed method be useful for 3D problems? Why?

Lastly, while the overall English is very good, please make the following minor English corrections:
"the possibility writing down" for "the possibility of writing down";
"depends on particular problem" for "depends on the particular problem";
"as it is 1D problem" for "as it is a 1D problem".
