Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The manuscript presents a comprehensive review of the occurrence and causes of wildfires and their impacts on the geoenvironment. It is a timely and relevant topic, given the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires globally. However, several areas require improvement before the manuscript can be considered for publication. I add a few suggestions below for the authors to improve the manuscript further.

-Line 69: The introduction is well-written and sets the context for the study. However, it lacks a clear statement of the research objectives and hypotheses. Including these would help readers understand the study's direction and purpose.

-Line 279: The manuscript lacks clarity in some sections, making it difficult for readers to follow the arguments presented. For instance, the discussion on soil organic carbon variability due to wildfires needs better organization. A more structured presentation of the cause-and-effect relationships between wildfires and geoenvironmental changes is necessary.

-Line 568-571: The manuscript mentions the need for a "complete re-thinking of national and international policies" concerning wildfire prevention and management. However, it does not provide specific recommendations or strategies. Expanding this section to offer concrete policy suggestions based on the findings would make the paper more actionable for policymakers.

-There are sections where the transitions between topics are abrupt, making it difficult for readers to follow the narrative. Please make the transitions between topics a little more connected.

-Some references are somewhat outdated. I think that updating the literature review to include the most recent studies would enhance the manuscript's relevance and credibility.
