Renewal of Scope for Biomass

Biomass was started in 2021 with the aim of providing an open access platform for scientific communications within the field of biomass and its uses. As the number of publications over the last two years (8 in 2021 and 26 in 2022) has followed a positive trend, there clearly has been a need for Biomass. Now, two years down the line, it is time to review the original aims and scope, to ensure that they are in line with the vital role biomass will play in a sustainable and circular society and to allow the journal to grow in publication frequency and quality.
Thus, we have sharpened our scope to focus on the use of biomass for materials and/or fuels, bioenergy, and in biorefining contexts. This includes the role of biomass in a carbon-constrained society and its contribution to reaching a carbon-negative state. However, the journal does not cover such aspects as the pure characterization of biomasses, nor the regional availability of biomass feedstock, without a specific relationship to a conversion pathway or biorefining approach.
The updated scope of Biomass includes, but is not limited to:
Biomass conversion;
Biomass valorization;
Biomass treatment;
Biodigestion;
Circular economy;
Bioenergy policy;
Bioenergy.
Thus, we now invite high-quality and high-impact papers focusing on these aspects to continue to develop and improve Biomass as a key open access outlet for scientific discussions and results within these areas. On our side, we will continue to prioritize rapid response and peer reviews without compromising the rigour of these processes.
