Dear Colleagues,
Fiber reinforced polymer composites have been successfully applied for several decades to load carrying structures, such as in aerospace, automotive, construction, sport good, etc. Most importantly, thermoset and thermoplastic polymers have significantly improved, not only in mechanical properties, but also in manufacturing process, along with hybrid composites, 3D fabrics, non-crimp fabrics (NCF), recycled fibers, and nano composites.
However, various failure mechanisms of composites are still unclear, often leading designers and material developers to resort to time-consuming experimental results. Failure can initiate at various constituent levels: Fiber, resin and fiber-matrix interface or inter layers. Furthermore, damages or cracks can propagate in very complex pattern. Such damage can initiate at the manufacturing process or under operational conditions. Environmental effects are also another major factor to investigate.
The main purpose of this special issue is to introduce recent advances in prediction and characterization of short-term and long-term failure behavior of polymer composites, mainly covering the subjects of creep, progressive damage, impact, fatigue and large deformation behavior of composites, which includes not only conventional fiber composites (e.g., carbon, glass, aramid, natural fibers) but also CNT and graphene nanocomposites. The results can be experimental observation, analysis based on multiscale approaches, homogenization, etc.
