Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The 28th International Scientific Conference, TRANSPORT MEANS 2024, will take place from 2 to 4 October 2024 in Kaunas, Lithuania. The session on waterborne transport will be held on October 4 at Klaipėda University, Bijūnų Str. 17, Klaipėda, Lithuania. Our conference will facilitate discussion, interaction, and knowledge exchange among researchers, industries, and engineers. We continue a long-standing tradition of addressing the most relevant scientific and practical issues in transport engineering. The conference focuses on live interaction among participants, but there is also some scope for a limited number of virtual oral and poster presentations.

The reports cover a wide variety of topics related to the most pressing issues of today’s development of transport systems, including smart, green, and integrated transport. This challenge aims to boost the competitiveness of the European transport industries and achieve a European transport system that is resource-efficient, climate- and environmentally friendly, safe, and seamless for the benefit of all citizens, the economy, and society. Resource-efficient transport respects the environment by making aircrafts, vehicles, and vessels cleaner and quieter to minimize the impact on the climate and environment, as well as by developing smart equipment, infrastructures, and services and by improving transport and mobility in urban areas.

The conference is organized by the Kaunas University of Technology in cooperation with Klaipeda University, IFToMM National Committee of Lithuania, Lithuanian Society of Automotive Engineers, The Division of Technical Sciences of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH). The main areas covered in the plenary session and in the sections include (but are not limited to) design development, the maintenance and exploitation of transport means, the implementation of advanced transport technologies, the development of defense transport, environmental and social impacts, advanced and intelligent transport systems, transport demand management, traffic control, the specifics of transport infrastructure, safety and pollution problems, integrated and sustainable transport, and the modeling and simulation of transport systems and elements.

Seaports are pivotal nodes in global trade, under increasing pressure to expedite green transitions while navigating the complexities of modern economic and environmental challenges. This research investigates the intricate relationship between the resilience of port organizational ecosystems and the successful implementation of green transitions. Employing a combination of focus group interviews and participatory observation, the study explores the primary obstacles, particularly the insufficiency of managerial capacity, which hampers the integration of technological innovations. Challenges identified include outdated infrastructure, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and the imperative for sustained investment in new technologies, along with the need to promote a culture of sustainability. Experts highlight the crucial role of managerial competencies and continuous learning in overcoming these barriers. Furthermore, the research underscores the importance of fostering strong partnerships among stakeholders, including government bodies, industry associations, and environmental organizations. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, port managers, and other stakeholders seeking to navigate the challenges for ensuring a sustainable future for the maritime sport organizational ecosystems and maritime industry. Comparative Studies of Major Sea Routes

A large amount of cargo is transported between European and Southeast Asian countries. Ships sometimes take different routes when sailing between ports due to the best commercial speed; navigational, economical, and hydrometeorological conditions; and political and military situations. Several routes are available for sailing between Europe and Southeast Asia: sailing the Suez Canal, sailing around the African continent, sailing the Panama Canal, as well as sailing the Northern Sea route. This article analyzes the possible sailing routes between Southeast Asia and Europe and presents a developed methodology for the evaluation of sailing routes. This sea route evaluation methodology is based on a comparative mathematical model that evaluates the main factors of cargo transportation by sea: transportation cost and time, possible maximum ship parameters, transportation energy (fuel) demand, and other possible factors, such as the probability of various restrictions. This paper presents a case study of cargo transportation between Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and Shanghai (China) using different possible sea routes. Assessments of various possible routes are presented; the main topics of discussion and conclusions are formulated. Full article
