Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The need to meet the ever-increasing water demand while the water supply continues to decrease due to climate change is prompting an urgent need to develop more flexible and climate-resilient water treatment technologies. Compared with other technologies, electrochemical and membrane based water treatment (EMWT) methods offer ways to develop such treatment technologies that feature decentralization and are fit-for-purpose.

Compared with other water treatment methods, EMWT methods have multiple advantages: they do not require the addition of chemical reagents, there is no secondary pollution generation, and they are versatile and have low treatment cost. EMWT methods can be used as independent treatment processes or as part of the treatment approach, including in the main treatment process or pre- or post-treatment step. Moreover, EMWT methods can be readily modularized as a turnkey unit. Considerable efforts have been devoted to developing EMWT technologies, and huge progress has been achieved in recent years, especially in combining these two technologies together.

The aim of this Special Issue is to present the latest cutting-edge research as well as future perspectives of the most promising applications of electrochemical and membrane technologies in water treatment. Both theoretical and experimental studies as well as comprehensive review and perspectives papers are welcome.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
