Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Ultrasound has undergone significant changes since, even in recent years. The original large machine has now evolved into a more powerful system with higher processing power and has been miniaturized into handheld systems. Advances in technology in electronics and better computing power have revolutionized ultrasound practice. Developments have been seen in transducer materials, array designs, and signal processing and have resulted in novel imaging modes like contrast imaging. Microbubble contrast agents have extended the clinical and research applications of ultrasound. Noninvasive techniques like Shear-wave imaging and fat quantification have helped with decreasing invasive procedures. Techniques like fusion imaging and navigation have enabled performing invasive procedures like biopsies and ablations safer even in lesions not easily seen on ultrasound. Ultrasound has recently also moved into therapeutic applications with high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and microbubble-assisted delivery of drugs. Artificial imaging is on the cusp of becoming mainstream in ultrasound. This Special Issue invites researchers to submit original research papers and review articles related to novel techniques in ultrasound. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Ultrasound contrast
  • Ultrasound elastography and fat quantification
  • Ultrasound-guided therapeutics
  • Novel transducer and signal processing techniques
  • Fusion and Navigation imaging
  • Artificial imaging

Purpose. The ultrasound imaging of the soft tissues of the face and neck in the vertical position of the patient and determining the degree of participation of each of them in the age-related changes in the contours of the face and neck. Methods. In this review, we discuss the ultrasound anatomy of the soft tissues of the face and neck, the importance of ultrasound for planning surgical treatment, and the results of clinical studies that report ultrasound imaging of the soft tissues of the cervicofacial region. Results. Ultrasound imaging allows for the determination of the causes of age-related changes in the contours of the soft tissues of the cervicofacial region as well as determining the further tactics of surgical treatment. Ultrasound results help the plastic surgeon at all stages of treatment including intraoperative evaluation of the effectiveness of correction. Conclusions. A review of the literature has shown the need for wider use of ultrasound in aesthetic surgery as an important diagnostic procedure that should be performed with the upright position of the patient that allows for an objective assessment of the degree of participation of each of the tissues (skin, adipose tissue, muscles, submandibular salivary glands, etc.) in the formation of age-related changes in the face and neck.
