Dear Colleagues,
It is evident that the Earth possesses only one atmosphere, thereby allowing air pollutants that originate from local or regional sources to potentially surpass local air quality standards on both global and regional scales through intercontinental and regional transport. Additionally, recent research has highlighted the significant impact of stratospheric-to-tropospheric transport, also known as deep stratospheric ozone intrusions, on near-surface air quality. The horizontal and vertical transport of air pollutants can also alter the atmospheric oxidizing capacity, further influencing the regional chemical composition. Complex terrain and underlying surface properties can alter regional atmospheric stratification and the boundary layer structure, triggering meso- to micro-scale circulations such as sea–land breezes, valley winds, gravity waves, and more. Foreign air pollutants, controlled by these complex physical processes and constrained by the complex terrain, interact with locally emitted substances through physical mixing, redistribution, and chemical reactions, leading to more challenging air quality issues.
This Special Issue, entitled "Recent Progress in Air Pollution Dispersion and Transport over Complex Terrain", seeks state-of-the-art publications (including review articles) on the dispersion and transport of atmospheric pollutants, particularly focusing on the comprehensive effects of multi-scale transport and diffusion on regional and local atmospheric environments, along with their terrain-meteorological mechanisms. Research employing artificial intelligence (AI), numerical simulations, and three-dimensional comprehensive observations is highly encouraged. Specifically, this Special Issue will cover topics including, but not limited to, the following:
- comprehensive mechanisms of multi-scale transport and dispersion over complex terrain;
- the extent of the impact of stratospheric deep intrusions on ozone in complex terrain;
- the implementation of new physical schemes related to atmospheric environments over complex terrain;
- pollution control strategies constrained by complex terrain-meteorological conditions.
