Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent decades, aerogels have been studied and used as high-performance materials in various research fields, such as filtration, energy storage and conversion, photocatalysis, sound insulation, etc. Several studies have been carried out regarding aerogel preparation and their use as coatings or interfaces for different substrates. Among them, metal oxide aerogels are of particular interest due to their three-dimensional (3D) porous structure, high specific surface area, the large pore volume. These structural properties offer aerogels multiple advantages compared to 1D materials (powders or films); for example, in photocatalytic applications, more active catalytic sites are formed and they can be functionalized with other active catalysts. In addition, they can be regenerated more easily than powder-type photocatalysts (with 1D structure). Moreover, due to their low weight and production and regeneration costs, aerogels can be used in the aeronautical or aerospace industry. Due to the stability metallic oxide aerogels at high temperatures, they can be employed in the thermal protection of surfaces.

The aim of this Special Issue is to publish high-quality research papers that address recent advances in the synthesis and structural and mechanical properties of aerogels, as well the application of metal oxide aerogels.

In particular, the scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Methods of synthesizing metal oxide aerogels;
  • Morpho-structural, mechanical and electrochemical properties of aerogels;
  • Techniques for the deposition coating of aerogels on different substrates;
  • Specific characteristics of metal oxide aerogels for application in filtration, energy storage and conversion, photocatalysis, sound insulation, and the aeronautical or aerospace industry.
