Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Smart material coating refers to an advanced coating that is able to detect environmental stimuli and respond accordingly with the variation of the specific stimulus. Materials that are able to dynamically adapt their properties to an external stimulus are called sensitive or intelligent. The standard thinking regarding coatings has been that of a passive layer that does not respond to the environment. A major trend driving the development of smart coating technologies is the continuous demand for higher performance to extend product lifetimes and reduce maintenance, to enhance energy efficiency both for cost and environmental reasons, and to cope with the change in substrates toward new and lightweight materials such as composites and aluminum. Smart or intelligent coating systems have been developed, tested, and researched in numerous laboratories and industries around the world. Examples of smart coatings include stimulus-sensitive, antimicrobial, antifouling, conductive, self-healing, and super-hydrophobic systems, and the advanced materials involved with smart material coatings include shape memory alloys (SMAs), shape memory polymers (SMPs), shape memory ceramics (SMCs), piezoelectric materials, magnetostrictive materials, electroactive materials, and combinations of these materials.
The scope of this Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers in the following concepts:·
- Protective smart coating;
- Smart actuation coating;
- Antimicrobial/antibacterial smart coating;
- Various smart coating mechanisms;
- Micro and nano study of smart coatings;
- Smart coating in electric generation;
- Smart coating in medicine;
- Smart coating in various industries;
- Super-hydrophobic to super-hydrophilic actuating smart coating;
- Smart coating surface and interface analysis.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
