Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Competitive and elite athletes are continuously challenged to find a balance between health and performance as they push their physical and mental boundaries in their pursuit of success. Beyond the desire to win and selection processes, the physical and sustainable health of the athlete must be considered. Whereas the health benefits of moderate exercise for the recreational athlete are well evidenced, the long-term physical health decrements to those with a ‘competition’ mindset and acceptance of excessive long-term training are less thoroughly researched. Good physical health leads to better athletic performance and neglect of health compromises the athlete; however, sustainable health is a necessity for long-term quality of life and is a moral obligation for those working with the athlete. The normalization of risk-taking as athletes push boundaries to succeed can be ruinous, with both short- and long-term consequences.
This Special Issue of IJERPH aims to attract papers about the relationship between physical and sustainable health within a high-demand training and competition environment. Submissions of intervention trials, observational trials, cross-sectional studies and reviews are encouraged. Longitudinal as well as experimental studies that examine outcome measures to the athlete with regards to physical and sustainable health in different sporting environments are also welcome, as are those looking at musculoskeletal injuries.
