Dear Colleagues,
Abscisic acid (ABA) is a key phytohormone involved in the regulation of plant development, as well as plant responses against different environmental constraints, such as cold, drought, salinity, and heavy metals. Due to its tremendous importance, during the last decades, the scientific community has made remarkable efforts to shed light on the synthesis, transport, perception, and transduction of ABA signals. Recently, it has been proposed that alternative splicing could have an important role in ABA signaling. Likewise, post-translational modifications, including dephosphorylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination have also been reported as important regulators of ABA signaling in Arabidopsis thaliana. Nevertheless, the impact that these mechanisms could have on plant stress tolerance has not been fully addressed. Moreover, mounting evidence highlights the crucial importance of the crosstalk of ABA with other hormones in the regulation of plant stress responses. In this Special Issue, we will focus on the latest aspect regarding the role of ABA in mediating plant stress tolerance in plants. We invite experimental and review articles describing new molecular mechanisms of ABA-dependent signaling processes in response to abiotic stress, the integration with other pathways, and the potential use of ABA in agriculture to improve crop tolerance and productivity.
