Dear Colleagues,
Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are gaining increasing attention both as possible therapeutic targets and as diagnostic biomarkers and specific predictors. This has facilitated investigations into what concerns their applicability since most of the genetic variations associated with diabetes are found in regions of the human genome that do not code for proteins. In fact, the human genome can be extensively transcribed into many ncRNAs, and they are closely linked to the onset and development of diseases.
The increase in non-protein-coding transcripts in complex organisms has led to the hypothesis that ncRNAs represent the components of a regulatory system parallel to that mediated by proteins but much more sophisticated. The mechanisms underlying the regulation of ncRNA gene expression have not been fully explained and, in fact, involve mechanisms that regulate transcription at the epigenetic level for mRNA processing and the control of protein activity.
It should be noted that advancing our understanding of ncRNAs and the mechanisms involved in transcriptional circuits could lead to new insights into the pathogenic mechanisms of complex diseases. Therefore, this Special Issue will focus on presenting molecular genetics and genomics studies that explore the effects of ncRNAs on transcriptional regulation and epigenetic mechanisms.
Dr. Mariagiovanna Tramontano from the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” will assist in managing the special issue.
