Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Agriculture today faces significant challenges due to serious abiotic stresses, such as drought, heavy metals, heat, and salt. These stresses limit the growth, metabolism, development, and yield of crop plants, adversely affecting food security and the health of populations worldwide. Understanding the physiological and biochemical responses of plants to these major stresses is a hot research topic. Recent advances in molecular mechanisms are being adopted to develop stress tolerance in plants. When exposed to abiotic stresses, plants perceive the stress stimulus, generate and transmit signals, and initiate appropriate physiological and biochemical changes. Stress-induced gene expression and metabolite synthesis play critical roles in enhancing tolerance. This Special Issue will focus on recent findings related to the physiological and biochemical responses, adaptation, and tolerance to these abiotic stresses at cellular, organellar, physiological, molecular, and whole-plant levels. It will also describe various methods and treatments being developed to improve tolerance in crop plants.

We welcome submissions that cover a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to, physiological and biochemical responses to drought, heavy metals, heat, and salt stresses; adaptation mechanisms and tolerance strategies at cellular and molecular levels; signal perception, transduction, and stress-responsive gene expression; metabolite synthesis and its role in stress tolerance; case studies on specific crops and their responses to abiotic stresses; innovative methods and treatments to enhance stress tolerance in crops; and integrated approaches combining physiological, biochemical, and molecular insights. We invite researchers and experts to contribute with original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and opinion pieces. This Special Issue aims to provide a deeper understanding of crop responses to abiotic stresses at physiological and qualitative levels, offer new insights into the processes and molecular interactions involved in stress responses, and share cutting-edge research and advancements that can lead to improved crop resilience and productivity.
