Dear Colleagues,
Micro-organisms bridge plants, soils, and animals, significantly impacting health and well-being. Environmental changes and agricultural practices can alter microbial communities, which regulate dynamic interactions among microbes, soils, plants, and animal hosts. Moreover, shifts in plant growth above ground indirectly influence soil conditions through root–microbe interactions. This, in turn, alters the finely tuned balance maintained among these complex ecosystems, resulting in, among other issues, the onset and diffusion of infectious diseases with repercussions for animals, the environment, and humans. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between micro-organisms and plants and between micro-organisms and soils, and their potential role in vehiculating pathobionts to the animal sphere, is essential in uncovering how microbial regulation can enhance health, including assessing interactions among all the components of the ecosystem, i.e., microbes, plants, animals, and soils. This understanding will aid in developing strategies to sustainably manage agricultural ecosystems.
Led by Dr. Wensheng Fang, Prof. Tilocca Bruno, and Dr. Bin Huang and assisted by Dr. Xiaoxiao Zhang (Guangxi University), this Special Issue will focus on unraveling the interactions between the environment (soils and plants) and animals as mediated by soil micro-organisms, including signaling and metabolic processes. We welcome high-quality submissions exploring microbial communities, soil nutrient cycling, plant stress resistance, antimicrobial resistance, and related fields.
