Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Neurodegenerative disorders are a heterogeneous group of disorders, largely age-dependent, affecting the central nervous system and eventually leading to neurodegeneration. The prevalence of these diseases is increasing, partly due to the aging population, with a consequent growing economic burden on healthcare systems. The current treatments are mostly symptomatic, without affecting the underlying cause of disease, and have no or only slight effects on disease progression. Some mechanisms common to several neurodegenerative conditions have been identified, such as the presence of misfolded protein aggregates, the abnormal accumulation of proteins, RNA toxicity, or translational products from repeat expansion within genes. Advancements in synthetic methods, molecular biology, and analytical techniques have evidenced the key roles that carbohydrates and their conjugates (from simple saccharide units to complex glycans) play in biological processes, such as protein folding, infection, cancer, and immune recognition.
IJMS has organized a series of Special Issues to highlight the latest advancements in this area of science in order to be at the forefront of different fields of research. This editorial initiative of particular relevance, led by Dr. Emilia Vitale, is focused on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, latest discoveries, recent advances, and future perspectives in the field of neurodegenerative disorders, neuroplasticity and glycoscience.
The present Special Issue, entitled “Glycoscience in Neurodegenerative Disorders”, aims to present recent research developments to those involved in this field and the wider community. We welcome contributions from papers which focus on topics within this field.
