Dear Colleagues,
Advanced genomic tools can have a transformative impact on evaluating the safety and potential risks of various agents. As the field of safety assessment evolves, integrating genomic technologies such as transcriptome analysis, protein sequencing, and gene expression profiling has become advantageous for a deeper and better understanding of how substances affect biological systems at the molecular level. Transcriptomics, which analyzes cellular and tissue transcriptomes, is of particular benefit in safety assessment by providing insights into how substances alter gene expression patterns, identifying potential biomarkers of toxicity, and understanding the mechanisms of toxicity. This molecular characterization enables a more precise evaluation of how different chemicals or drugs interact with cellular pathways, potentially leading to toxicity. Other ‘omics technologies, such as proteomics, can further complement transcriptome analysis by providing additional layers of information on how substances influence protein function, level, or modification.
Altogether, genomic technologies offer a unique opportunity to generate a holistic and more precise view of the molecular impacts of substances, paving the way for more accurate and predictive safety assessments. This Special Issue invites scholars and nonclinical safety experts to contribute research that leverages these cutting-edge tools to advance the field of safety assessment. We welcome innovative studies, comprehensive reviews, and novel methodologies that integrate transcriptomics, protein sequencing, and gene expression profiling to uncover new insights into molecular safety.
