Dear Colleagues,
Composite structures and metamaterials, when properly designed, can be effectively used to manipulate acoustic/elastic waves. Understanding and conscious control of the acoustic properties of these artificial materials provide the basis for a wide variety of practical applications such as reduction of noise and vibrations, waveguiding, filtering, acoustic focusing, sensing, acoustic manipulating of objects, cloaking, etc. Composite materials can exhibit extraordinary acoustic properties not found in natural materials due to their special structural and component organization. Tunable acoustic composites and metamaterials further elevate this potential, enabling dynamic adjustments to suit specific applications. The transition from passive to active composite materials (for example, with a piezoelectric component) provides enhanced benefits when manipulating acoustic fields. In addition to the development of functional composites, the inverse problem, which consists in the use of ultrasonic methods and techniques to analyze characteristics of composite materials, is also of interest. Research involving studies of relationship between the structure and properties of acoustic composites and metamaterials, novel approaches in their designing and fabrication techniques, characterization, and potential applications are relevant from both theoretical and practical points of view.
