Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Fatigue is one of the main causes of materials failure. For this reason, it is crucial to develop methodologies capable of predicting fatigue failure during the design process or of detecting it during the service life.

Regarding the fatigue design process, it can be described by the following three simple steps: determining the stress time histories, calculating the fatigue stress spectrum, and evaluating the total fatigue damage. Nevertheless, the loading type and the expected material response play an essential role in deciding which models will be used to solve these three steps, which is still an open issue that has not been solved in the literature. For this reason, we invite researchers to participate in this Special Issue with relevant works that contribute to updating the state-of-the-art about fatigue loading modelling, fatigue material characterization, fatigue failure determination, fatigue failure criteria, cycle counting techniques, fatigue damage accumulation models, and other relevant approaches focused on understanding the fatigue failure process.

On the other hand, in order to estimate or identify fatigue damage during service, structural health monitoring has become an alternative to the local inspection methods in the last decades. Nowadays, monitoring solutions are cost-effective, and many types of sensors and instrumentation are available to measure the different variables involved in damage detection, localization, and assessment. Accordingly, we invite researchers to contribute to this Special Issue with papers focused on improving the state-of-the-art related to measurement techniques (accelerations, displacements, strains, etc.), signal processing (filtering, Fourier transformations, windows functions, etc.), stress estimation, damage accumulation and detection, finite element model updating technics, and other topics related to the fatigue monitoring of real structures in service.

In summary, we invite researchers to submit relevant works in the Special Issue titled “Advanced Models on Structural Fatigue Monitoring” in order to share the methodologies that facilitate the fatigue assessment and the calculation of the remaining fatigue life of structures and mechanical systems while they are in operation.
