Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Lipidomics is the study of lipids and their interactions with other molecules in a biological system. It has become an important field of research in recent years, particularly in the study of lipid metabolism and the role it plays in various physiological and pathological processes. Some of the recent advances in the study of lipid metabolism based on lipidomics include:

(1) identification of new lipid species,

(2) characterization of lipid pathways,

(3) identification of lipid biomarkers,

(4) development of lipid-lowering drugs,

(5) study of lipid–protein interactions.

Lipidomics has helped to elucidate the role of lipids in various biological processes, such as inflammation, immune response and cell signaling. Complex regulatory mechanisms that control lipid metabolism, including transcription factors, enzymes and signaling pathways, have been widely investigated. Recent papers have also demonstrated mechanisms by which the gut microbiome is involved in the modulation of lipid metabolism. Studies have shown that abnormalities in lipid metabolism are associated with a variety of diseases, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and others. By analyzing lipid synthesis, storage, transport and utilization, lipidomics can provide valuable information about diagnosis of disease, disease progression and the response to treatment. Advances in mass spectrometry and other analytical techniques have enabled lipidomics researchers to analyze large numbers of lipid species simultaneously, with results displaying high sensitivity and accuracy. This has allowed for the detection of minor changes in lipid levels that might have been missed using traditional methods. However, there are still many questions and topics related to lipids and their metabolism that need clarification and elucidation. Therefore, this Special Issue was launched in order to collect advances in research of lipids and lipid metabolism based on lipidomics.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
