Dear Colleagues,
Fatigue damage has particular relevance to the life span of mechanical components and structures, as it is a leading cause of registered structural failures during service. As such, it is one of the primary constraints in the design of dynamically loaded components. To understand and characterize the mechanisms of materials damage that lead to fatigue, continuous research has been conducted, from primordial rotating bending fatigue studies in XIX century to low cycle fatigue studies in mid XX century and the more recent Very High Cycle Fatigue or Giga Cyce Fatigue, which extended the concept of fatigue to over 1 billion cycles (109), covering a wide range of fatigue lives and loading conditions. The continuous rise of new technologies and manufacturing processes, coupled with the need to increase the lifetime and safety of mechanical systems, necessitates continual advancement in fatigue knowledge to effectively extend the service life of load-bearing mechanical components. Moreover, the emergence of additive manufacturing (AM), which can present anisotropy and heterogeneous microstructure, has presented new challenges in material testing and characterization. Most of the fatigue test equipment includes uniaxial tension–compression test machines, which induce a unidirectional and uniform stress state. However, it is imperative to acknowledge that there are various different stress states, recognising that multiaxial stress states occur in many full-scale structures, and that the occurrence of pure uniaxial and uniform stress states is relatively rare. From initial rotating bending testing machine, to servohydraulic testing, to electric actuators and more recent ultrasonic fatigue testing, new insights are available for materials fatigue testing; therefore new possibilities are available for characterizing materials fatigue either in uniaxial or multiaxial loading and from low to high and very high frequencies of testing.
This Special Issue aims to cover all these topics, providing new insights into fatigue testing of metallic materials. Original research articles and reviews are welcome.
