Dear Colleagues,
Nanotechnology has shown significant potential in various fields, including medicine and biomedical applications. Nanotechnology has led to the development of nano-formulations, whose properties are mainly determined by their size, shape, surface characteristics, and composition. These formulations have a high surface-to-volume ratio, leading to increased surface reactivity and enhanced bioavailability. Moreover, these nano-carriers have enabled the delivery of drugs, genes, and other therapeutic agents with high precision and efficiency. Nano-enabled formulations have recently attracted significant attention for their potential applications in various biomedical fields, such as the integration of nanomaterials into drug delivery systems, diagnostic tools, and therapeutic agents. Among the most studied nanoplatforms are liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, dendrimers, and solid lipid nanoparticles. Due to their small size, nano-formulations can enter cells and interact with biological systems at a molecular level, making them ideal for targeted drug delivery. Another promising application of nano-formulations is gene therapy. Nano-formulations can efficiently deliver nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA, to target cells, paving the way for the development of gene-based treatments for various genetic disorders. Although nano-enabled formulations have shown significant potential in biomedical applications, some challenges still need to be addressed. One of the major concerns is the potential toxicity of these formulations. Some nanoparticles can trigger an inflammatory response or exhibit cytotoxic effects, limiting their applications in the clinical setting. Moreover, there is a need for standardized methods for the characterization and evaluation of nano-formulations to ensure their safety and efficacy.
Therefore, the integration of nanotechnology into biomedical applications through nano-enabled formulations holds great promise for advancing healthcare practices. By harnessing the unique properties of nanomaterials, researchers are paving the way for innovative diagnostic tools, targeted therapies, and personalized treatment strategies in the field of biomedicine. Further research and development in this field will aid in overcoming the existing challenges and lead to the development of safe and effective nano-formulations for biomedical applications.
Within the current Special Issue, we aim to bring together full papers, both original articles and reviews and short communications, on recent developments in designing nano-enabled formulations to improve drug bioavailability, targeted delivery, and controlled release, as well as to enhance the stability and biological activity of the nano-formulations, making them valuable tools in precision medicine.
